Comedy is the hardest of all the stage arts
Comedy is the one stage art where performer needs instant audience reaction, or show is deemed dead.
In all others, performers need audience to remain quite, like a musical, or opera or play, the reaction comes after performance is over in applause or reviews.
But in comedy, you get your reviews throughout the show by audiences laughter or lack of.
And in comedy, stand up, you're on your own, there is no cast, crew, to absorb the embarrassment should show flop, there's only you, like in golf.
If you fail, you fail alone, but if you succeed, no one else can take credit.
That's a lot of pressure to bear.
Most would rather sit in audience and laugh, rather than risk getting laughed at or failing in front of others.
